Guidance notes if you intend to send a scanned copy of a photograph.
However, please don't be put off. If you can't understand any of the following, just ignore it and send them by email

This page may help a few people who know even less than me about scanner resolution, DPI, pixels, etc, etc. We both want your photograph to look good on the web site and for the inexperienced, a few guidelines may help.

Although images only need a resolution of 72 pixels for display on a computer screen, the quality of any printed copies wouldn't be very good. I prefer to scan at a resolution of 300 dpi. This higher resolution also gives me more flexibility should I need to edit the photograph. Please remember - big is better - I can make them smaller but quality deteriorates when making them larger.

The majority of the photographs on this web site have been set at 950 pixels wide. If, like me and 66% of others, you have your screen resolution set at 1024 x 768, most photographs will neatly fill the screen width without having to use the scroll bar. Photographs of entire Flights may need to be wider than 950 dpi so that individual people don't appear too small.
Alternatively, if you have the 'source' and 'target' size shown, set the scale option to 100% so that the copy will be the same size as your original.

Please save and send your photograph as a JPEG file, not a BMP or TIFF. Please don't insert the photograph in a 'Word' document. Send it as an Attachment (which I always virus scan before opening)

If your photograph has signatures on the back, please scan and send it. It is a tremendous help if you can send a typed list of the names as well. Even if you can't remember the names or read them, your guess will be better than mine.

If you have several images to send, consider sending each separately so as to reduce the individual transfer time.

Apart from the Copyright issue, experience has shown that newspaper cuttings lack adequate quality for display on the web site.

I regret there is insufficient web space to display photographs featuring individuals or very small groups.

Please give all emails a descriptive subject line, such as RAF Bridgnorth. Like you, I already get my share of junk emails with meaningless titles that go straight into the bin without being opened.
